Percutaneous aortic valve replacement
In Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), a synthetic valve is transported to the heart through a small hole made in groin. This procedure can be compared to that performed when placing a stent, or performing balloon angioplasty. The procedure was developed in Europe, where it was initially performed in 2002. Results have shown the procedure to be effective in improving functioning in the patients with severe aortic stenosis. However, in the United States the procedure is in clinical trial testing, because PAVR has not yet been approved by the FDA...
