IV contrast material

Cholecystography

Cholecystography
Oral cholecystography is a procedure used to visualize the gallbladder by administering, by mouth, a radiopaque compound that is excreted by the liver. This excreted material will be concentrated in the gallbladder, which extracts water, thus concentrating the excreted substance. With the substance in the gallbladder, an abdominal film can be performed. Since only 10% of gallstones are radiopaque, the remaining 90% will appear as translucent areas after a OCG (oral cholecystography). Today ultrasound and CT are used instead of cholecystography. It should not be confused with cystography, which is imaging of the urinary bladder.
